AI as a Language Partner: Evidence-Based Insights for Foreign Language Education

Abstract
This talk introduces the Faculty of Informatics and Management at the University of Hradec Králové, a dynamic research hub linking computer science, management, and language education. The presentation highlights the faculty’s interdisciplinary projects and its commitment to digital innovation in teaching and learning.
Building on this foundation, the second part will showcase evidence-based studies on the use of artificial intelligence in foreign language education. From conversational agents to adaptive feedback tools, AI is emerging as a powerful “language partner” that can boost learner engagement, accuracy, and autonomy. The session will present key findings, practical applications, and future directions, offering insights for researchers and educators interested in integrating AI into language learning.
Bio
Prof. PhDr. Blanka Klímová, M.A., Ph.D. serves as the Vice-Dean for International Relations at the Faculty of Informatics and Management, University of Hradec Králové, Czech Republic. She is also a professor in the Department of Applied Linguistics. Her teaching and research focus primarily on English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and the integration of digital tools in foreign language education. In addition to her pedagogical work, she supervises doctoral students both domestically and internationally. Prof. Klímová is an active member of multiple research councils and editorial boards and frequently contributes as a chair or member of conference committees at both national and international levels. With an extensive research portfolio, she has authored over 300 original and review articles indexed in Web of Science. Her leadership in academic projects includes, for example, serving as the head of a working group in the COST project (CA19102) – Language in the Human-Machine Era and as the project leader for the Grant of the Fund for Bilateral Relations (Reg. No. EHP-BFNU-OVNKM-4-257-01-2023) – Artificial Intelligence in Formal Foreign Language Education. Recognized for her scholarly contributions, she has been ranked among the World’s Top 2% Scientists by Stanford University’s Global List—twice for a single year (2020, 2022) and once for her career-long impact (2020).
